The Day After...

Happy Boxing Day!!! The "Day After". Christmas has come, the goose is no more. But, yet, it's still a holiday.
Chelsea plays today. Go Blues!!!
The CBJ play tomorrow against the Philly Flyers. We need a win in a bad way. They need to show that they can come together in the face of adversity.
I'm leaving to pick-up the kids in a few hours. DEFINATELY looking forward to that! We'll also celebrate Christmas this evening.
My wife got me a very nice leather Columbus Blue Jackets coat & my mother got me a Chelsea FC jersey (3rd jersey from 2007).
That's all for now. I'll have pics to post in a few days.
Ciao.

'Tis the season...

Merry Christmas to everyone. I hope that you are enjoying the holiday with family & friends. If, by chance, you are having eggnog, please have some with me in mind. I'm working a thirty-six hour shift at the firehouse so that the guys with kids can spend the 25th with their families. My kids will be here on the 26th, so that's when we'll celebrate christmas. We're taking the kids to see the Harlem Globetrotters on Monday at Nationwide Arena. It should be fun! I'll be posting pictures of the holidays and my youngest daughter Paiges' birthday after the holidays.

So here's to you... Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Ciao.

Let it snow...let it snow...let it snow...Not so much!

I'm really not liking the weather right now. YUK!!! Snow & cold is great when you're younger, but it wreaks havoc on your bones & joints when you get older. It's time to move to a tropical island... I wish!
Chelsea FC played to draw on Sunday to keep them in 2nd place in the premiership.
Last Friday, we had our annual Christmas party at Pleasant Twp Fire Dept. It was a nice affair with a catered meal that I thought was so/so.
I also was asked to give the prayer before the meal. Here it is:
"O Lord, we thank you for this opportunity to share in this gathering for a time of refreshment and fellowship. Help us to work, think and pray together; that we may be more perfectly fitted to serve you and those with whom we work, in the task in which we have been called.
Help us God to look wise, fill us with high ideals, inspire us with love and good will to all; that we may rightly lead in the paths of chivalry and honor. All this, we ask in your name. Amen."

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

On December 9th, 1854, Alfred Lord Tennyson graced us with arguably his most well known poem about the honor and horrors of war. Remember your history.

The Charge of the Light Brigade

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!" he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Some one had blunder'd.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wonder'd.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre-stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not,
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wonder'd.
Honor the charge they made!
Honor the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

Monday...again.

It's Monday...again. Two weeks (and a couple of days) till christmas. Sometimes I think that Ireally do need a strait-jacket. Not for the holidays, mind you. Just in general. Just kindding, of course!... or am I? (Hint ~ yes, I'm just kidding!).
Somehow, I feel a bit melancholy today. Listening to Tom Waits probably doesn't help matters much. But I have always really liked his music. There are no pretensions to his songs. He lays it bare, for all of us to see. And it's not always pleasant, but it is real. I'm sure, for some people, that the truths he sings about, they'd rather not acknowledge. He just seems to put a face on the reality of life.
Anyway, on to more pleasant things. The Kidz will be here on the 26th of December... Yea!!! Although they seem to be smarter than I ever was at their age. Oh well... that's good news for them. I can only hope they have an easier time going through life than I've had. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I've got great kids, a great wife & a great family!!!
I'll be forty-one December 29th. I guess that means I've officially reached middle-age. Really, what are you gonna do? Keep on keepin' on.
Ciao.

It's the weekend...

It's "silly" time here at Gas as Cheap as Thrills. Saturdaze are made for absolutly no thinking on my part, unless of course I'm working (which I'm not today). Working on the "honey-do list in between making music mixes for my other blog. The CBJ are playing a late game in LA tonight.

It's snowing right at this moment in time. I've come to realize that I really don't like the cold anymore. I used to live for the winter time. But now, no, I don't like it.

Anyway, tomorrow is my mothers birthday. Happy Birthday Mom! It's also the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, in case you've forgotten your history.

Thought for the day:

" As a rule, there is no surer way to the dislike of men than to behave well where they have behaved badly "

Monday...

Steve Mason is the single, biggest reason our team has not got down on themselves after tough losses. This kid plays the way someone whos' been in the league for a few years does. He kept them in the game tonight, which they went on to win 3-2 over the Canucks. Kudos !!!

Chelsea is still at the top of the table in the Premier League. Go Blues !!!

I'm working quite a bit this week, so posts might be slow in coming. If you haven't already done so, check out my music blog (Cheap Gas Music - it's on the left side of the page in the link section).

The kidz will be here 12/26 for a week. Xmas, birthdays, New Years party all rolled into one.

Yea!!! Friday!!!

It's cold outside! But... Yea!!! It's Friday!!!

It also happens to be my wifes birthday. First, I'll cook a nice supper (fresh Tilapia, bottle of wine, etc.) for her. Then... presents! She deserves everything I am able to give her. She puts up, on a daily basis, with my all-around, general craziness and insanity. I don't know how she does it.

So this one's for you my dear...

Happy Birthday !!!

13 November 2008

NY trip...

As promised, here's some pics from my trip to NY for my Daughter Alexis' birthday.

As you can see, she's just as insane as me! The last pic is all three of them; Hunter, Paige & Alexis.

It was a good trip back. It's always great when I get to see the kids! I also competed in the annual Haunted Waters Disc Golf tournament. Needless to say, I didn't do so well. I guess that's what I get for not playing but maybe twice a year. All in all, fun was had by all.

Chelsea FC is still at the top of the table in the Premiership, the CBJ are doing better and the Crew is playing in the Eastern Conference Finals (MLS) tonight!

I'm still not sure where everything is going job-wise. I still seem to be "marking time" as they say. Almost 41 & I'm not "there" yet... wherever "there" is. Oh well...

More later...

Ciao.

11 November 2008

Today, we remember...

... All those who have served our country since its' inception. Without them, we would not be here. If you know a veteran, tell them "thank you"; if you don't, say a prayer for them in whatever faith you practice. Remember, it's not just in times of war that we need to thank our veterans; it's also in peaceful times.

On a side note, I apologize for the lack of recent posts. I've been getting my other blog up and running (Cheap Gas Music) and also just got back from a trip to upstate NY to visit my kidz, family & friends. I will update w/pics the NY trip in the next couple of days.

Also, thanx to Sarah (Neutral Zone Trap) for the add on her blogroll. Go check out her blog (see my links) along with my other sites of interest.

New Mix

Here's a new mix I made today. For the un-initiated, these are mash-ups (bootlegs, if you will). This means two or more songs "mashed" together to make a new song. Pretty neat, huh? It allows me to see (hear) the music in a new light.

The Music filled me up... Like my ears could breathe it in.

Something felt changed in me... I felt like I was part of something bigger.

I could taste magic and speak art... Hear the turn of the universe.

At least, this is what music means to me.

Wax Audio - Whole Lotta Sabbath
G3RSt – Take Off The Beginning
The Illuminoids – Should I Stay Or Wait For The Man
G3RSt – Smells Like Runnin’
The Illuminoids – Teenage Electric Lobotomy
G3RSt – A White Guy Is Playing At My House
The Illuminoids – Gimme Suffragette City Shelter
G3RSt – Pretender To Heaven
Voicedude – Turning Sukiyaki
G3RSt – Surrender All Your Lovin’
Pytski- We Will Rock With The Flow
G3RSt – Very Voodoo
The Illuminoids – God Save The Thief
G3RSt – The Ballad Of Chasey Pain
The Illuminoids – Pretend We’re North American Fun
G3RSt – E.C.D.T. Japan
The Illuminoids – Dead Mongoloid Loser
G3RSt – Bloom To Me
Leebuzz – Should I Go Around The World

"The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. Now, the making of a good compilation tape is a very subtle art. Many do's and don'ts. First of all you're using someone else's poetry to express how you feel. This is a delicate thing. Anyway..."

Just one of those days...

Halloween always makes me think of the Bauhaus. Post-Punk, Goth, call them what you like. Their music has always coincided with the fall weather and Halloween especially.

"White on white translucent black capes...Back on the rack...Bela Lugosi's dead

The bats have left the bell tower...The victims have been bled...Red velvet lines the black box...Bela Lugosi's dead

Undead...undead...undead

The virginal brides file past his tomb...Strewn with time's dead flowers...Bereft in deathly bloom...Alone in a darkened room...

The count

Bela Logosi's dead"

See what I mean? It just fits. The time of year, the season, the darkening sky... it all just fits. Now and forever. Bela's undead indeed.

Crossroads...

Have you ever come to one of those points in your life that you suspect will end badly, but you have to forge onward on principal? I've come to that crossroad. I'm not sure how it will end, but you never know...sometimes, principal is all we have to stand on.
I'll keep you posted as this develops...

And..........The Fall

It's that time of year again. Falling leaves, falling temperatures, falling stock markets...What? You think I make this stuff up? Read any newspaper, watch any news channel; ask me, I'll tell 'ya.

It was once said (or sung) "The futures' so bright, I gotta wear shades...". They lied. The world's going to hell in a handbasket...well, actually it's moving at warp speed Mr Sulu!!! Towards the most obvious depression (obvious to me anyway) to hit this nation in quite some time. This used to be a nation of Innovators, Inventors and Leaders. Now...not so much. We have become a nation of "where's the next hand-out coming from". I have but one thing to say to people who want hand-outs....Get up off your arse and WORK for it!!! I will now get off my soapbox. Wouldn't want to sound too preachy, right?

On a much brighter note, I found this picture of our very own Columbus Blue Jacket, Captain Rick Nash...

It's for the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation. I'm not so sure that I could pull off wearing pink as well as he does, but, there you go.

And you thought that all hockey players did was fight. Do you feel properly chastised now?

Chelsea FC won again this past weekend. Go Blues!!!

The Columbus Crew is still on top of the MLS standings and are very close to winning the Supporters Shield for the season. Go Crew!!!

And, for now, I do believe that is all. Work, sleep, play if you have time.

Ciao.

Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon...

The weekend is almost over, but what a weekend it's been! First, the Columbus Blue Jackets training camp officially opened on the ice yesterday. It was good to see all of the returning players as well as the new guys we signed this summer. Here's a shot of the top line of Nash~Brassard~Huselius during practice...

I really believe we have a shot of making the Playoffs this year. Not going all the way to The Cup, mind you, but giving a good showing of ourselves. Go Jackets!!!

Next, we received from a friend of a friend a FREE 54" big screen TV! Don't worry...I found the room to put it in my living room!

And finally, this morning, Chelsea FC played Manchester Utd. to a draw @ 1-1. That still keeps Chelsea in 2nd in the league and still ahead of our dreaded rivals Man U.!!! Go Blues!!!

Ciao, for now...

Runnin' Down A Week(end)

The picture at right will give you some idea of the wind damage we experienced yesterday evening throughout central Ohio. Remnants of hurricane Ike. We had sustained wind speeds of 40+ mph. It went on like this for approximatley 6-7 hours. Not Fun! Amazingly enough, there wasn't any rain to go along with the wind.

Go Blues!!! Chelsea FC won again this weekend! We will get some silver this year.

CBJ training camp starts Saturday @ the Dispatch Ice Haus (attached to Nationwide Arena). Of course, I'll be there. Word is that R.J. Umberger is a BEAST! First home game October 17th against our nemesis...The Preds! They (Preds) have a new slogan this year "Stays With You". I prefer the slogan "Stays With You...Like A Bad Case Of Jock-Itch!!!" Somehow, I don't think it'll fly in Nashville though.

As most of you know, I'm not going to Iraq. For the time being, I'll be here in Central Ohio. Ciao!

Hey man, nice shot!

"There is one thing stronger than all the armies in the world, and that is an idea whose time has come."

~Victor Hugo

Obviously, at least to me...now...at this time in my brief history on this spinning blue orb we call our home; the dream is DEAD. Stick a fork in it, trampled underfoot, left rotting on the side of the road...DEAD. The dream (or idea, depends on your point of view) of going overseas and getting ahead in life versus just marking time...It's DEAD! The biggest plus (to put a positive spin on it) is that I won't die or get injured in some far away country. But, really, that's the only plus. It's not that I had some freaked-out death wish (which some of you thought); no, I was reaching for my own personal slice of the American Dream. Somehow, the ladder to that dream turned out to be a few rungs short. Maybe it was a step ladder. I reached the top step, reached out for it, and lo & behold, face-plant back to earth before you can start cheering. The time has NOT come for that idea; not now, nor, I fear ever.

When life hands you lemons...throw them in the trash. I really don't like lemons. They don't have much use in my book. Come to think of it, they're alot like life; rather bitter.

I'm not really sure where this leaves me at this point in time. Wondering... guessing... in debt... WAIT a minute! I've got IT! I'm already living the American Dream!!! I've got to figure, if GOD's testing me... it must be one hell of a LOOOOOOOONG test! Pass, fail or break even; I'm ready for it to be done.

Please, don't get me wrong, or misunderstand what I'm saying. I'm thankful, beyond belief, for my children and my very loving wife. Without them, what's the point of it? I just want to be able to provide more than "just living" for them.

There are so many things I want to do. Come hell or high water, I'll do them. Ciao.

Labor (-ious) Day

Pay Attention...no, seriously, pay attention...

"It's brutal out there - people tryin' to knock you down, shake you up, make you quit. It's called hockey. Sound familiar? It's a lot like life. You want to succeed? You gotta be tough, stand up for yourself. Sometimes you dish it out. Other times? You gotta take it. But you keep... Getting... Up. No matter how much it hurts. Give up? Give in? Wha? Pft, yeah, right. Never! Rough stuff? Hey, you gotta defend yourself and your friends. That's what it's all about. That's... What friends... Do. Yeah it's aggressive, and I like it. Why? Because... I... Get it."

-- Dennis Leary
Have a _____ day. Your choice, fill-in the blank. Ciao.
P.S. Random thought for the day... "Because PUCK is a funny word". (This might not be funny if you're not into hockey...Your loss, not mine.)

A Higher State of Timekeeping

"time is on my side..."

Somehow, I think the Rolling Stones lied when they wrote the lyrics to this song. Really, I prefer Bob Dylans' words..."He not busy being born, is busy dying". O' how these words ring so true that it hurts. Does anyone really understand "What's Goin' On?" Because, if you do, Please, Oh please, clue me in. My life just seems to be spinning in an endless circle...round and round...where is the door outta here? Don't get me wrong, I have a great wife and kids; not to mention an awesome family & friends. It's just that I feel like I'm marking time. Once, just once, in my life I'd like for something to go really right (job-wise). It looks like my overseas deployment won't happen...New York, again. Oh well...

On a very much brighter note...Chelsea FC won again (1-0 v. Wigan). Go Blue!!! Still top o' the league!!!

Until next time...Put your feet in your mouth & keep reaching for your hands.

Dancing on the escalator of life

Do you ever get that feeling that life is just an endless series of steps not really leading anywhere? I mean if you take one step forward somehow you end up at least two steps behind. This is how I feel on a daily basis dealing with New York. I don't even live there anymore (and haven't for quite some time now) and, still, they seem to be able to control certain things in my life. It just makes me want to scream loudly from the top of my lungs (or the bottom; it depends on your point of view, I guess). Two thirds of the way through August, and I'm still in limbo regarding my overseas deployment.
On a much happier note...the Blues won!!! Chelsea FC is on top of the premiership. I know, it's only the very beginning to the season, but they won that first match against Portsmouth in a dominating fashion! Blue is the color, fottball is the game...
As always, I'll keep you posted.

Sedation

Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours ago
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do
Nowhere to go
I wanna be sedated

When life starts beating the living shit out of you, listen to the Ramones. They sang about teen angst in the 70s' but it is still appropriate today. Somehow, believe it or not, listening to them always seems to sooth me, help take the edge off, so to speak.

It really gets me how cynical the beaurocrats (local on up) have become in this country. They don't actually want to use thier brains for anything other than reading a reply to whatever question you might have from a pre-written script of negative musings. You take time out of your schedule to try and talk with someone in an office somwhere who can make a decision in your favor. Only to find out that, lo and behold, you have to speak with someone in another office. So, you call them on the phone and they tell you that you can't speak to anyone in this office. You have to call back to the first office. Round and round it goes. See, they do this in order to get you to give up trying. And believe me, most give up trying.

I actually have one person who is willing to try and help me. My elected offical (federal level) has a woman in his office who is actually HELPING me! My hats' off to her for giving it the 'ol college try. I don't care if it's an election year or not. Just by talking with me and trying to get something done for one of his constituents gets my vote. Every single time.

So, I sit here, waiting patiently for her to get the big machine in motion, and moving toward a favorable solution to my problem. Once again, I'll keep you posted as this saga develops...

The REAL football is about to start

Chelsea FC kicks off the season August 17th vs. Portsmouth FC at "The Bridge". They almost won the league last season...it went down to the final match! New season...new hopes! Go Blue!!!

As you can see, football (soccer) is my other great love in sports. Formula One racing ranks a close third.

Radio I like

I sometimes have one hell of a time finding music I like on the internet. Every once in a while, I get lucky. Here's one that, if you like the 80s' (NOT that 80s') you might like this. Radio Nigel http://www.radionigel.com/index.html

If that's not your cup of tea, here's another one that I'm always listening to. It's a great mix of just about anything you might like. It's Radio Caroline http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk/

Hopefully, you might like these and give them a listen. If not, oh well.

The Go Date

I received my medical packet from the company today with the date of September 8th, 2008 being the "GO" date. I was hoping to maybe squeeze in one pre-season CBJ game, but nay.

I'm starting to wrap things up with the kidz. We road trip back to New York on Friday. It'll be good to see all the family & friends back there.

I have much to do in a short time, so forgive me if it's a while between posts.

20 July 2008

the mid-July thingy...

The kidz have been here for three weeks, and what a three weeks it's been! We've done many things, including hockey, fireworks, mini-golf, etc. The zoo was a blast as always.

The kidz keep me hopping, as always. We are celebrating my sons' B-Day (10th) on Wednesday. Should be a blast.

I have to take a call from the Company on Monday and should (hopefully) have my departure date then. I'll keep everyone posted.

Stay safe out there!

Daddy Gets His Mind Blown

Do you know the songs "Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star" and "The Alphabet Song" (You know, "Now I know my ABC's, next time won't you sing with me.")?

Do you realize that they are, in fact, the same song? Sing them back to back. It's the same melody. Forty years I've known those songs and never put two and two together.

Holy shitballs.

Another draft day has come and gone. Our Blue Jackets drafted well (Filatov) and made a nice addition to the team with the trade for RJ Umberger. The official draft party was at Chammps (Easton) and much celebrating was done by all. LightTheLamp was there taking pictures. I believe there's even a picture of me & Stinger. I'll get them posted soon!

The time-frame for my journey to Iraq looks like it will happen sometime in mid-August. I have one more HazMat Operations class to take, so I should know my departure date mid-July at the latest. Once again, I'll keep you posted.

My kids will be here on Saturday for about a month. Then it's road-trip time to New York to see friends & family before the trip overseas.

I hope everyone is having a great week!

Ciao for now!

And the winner is...

...Ladymedic5, who correctly supplied the correct answer to the question "what song/artist does the title of my blog come from". The correct answer...Blue Oyster Cult - Before The Kiss, A Redcap. Ladymedic5 will be receiving a station t-shirt direct from one of twenty fire stations in Iraq. Congratulations!!!

Next up, Father's Day

Here's to wishing a Happy Father's Day to all of you fathers out there. Unfortunately, I'll be working. So kick back and relax. It's YOUR day!

If anyone...

...Can guess the song/artist that the title of my blog comes from...Surprise!!!...I'll send you a t-shirt from my fire station in Iraq. Guess Hard!!!

First day, new blog...

The blog is up and running!

Seeing as it looks like I'm going to be out of the country for a while, I thought I'd start a blog to keep those (few) who have some interest in me somewhat informed as to what's happening in my world. I will be posting to the blog quite frequently (I hope!). I'll be posting pictures also.

There are a couple of you who are also HOCKEY fans (Let's Go Jackets!). I expect that you keep me informed as much as possible, as I'm going to miss the whole '08/'09 season. http://lightthelamp.blogspot.com/ is my blog of choice to keep up with what's going on in the world of CBJ Hockey.

I will of course keep everyone informed as I get closer to the date that I leave.

Best regards,
Rick
